In any internet safety regime, children should have rights specific to them. These could be modelled on the existing 5Rights.
1. The Right to Remove
2. The Right to Know
3. The Right to Safety and Support
4. The Right to Informed and Conscious Use
5. The Right to Digital Literacy
Children’s data requires a higher level of protection because they are not mature enough to make (some) decisions in the same way as adults but also because of the distinction between different ages and their capacity. The current data protection regime and the new Data Protection Bill fails to include the special interests of children. Children must have a status.
