Protect public interest journalism

The data protection bill should include an exemption for public interest journalism where journalists are regulated by IMPRESS: The Independent Monitor for the Press.

The IMPRESS code was drafted following a major public consultation and addresses the key aspects of modern data privacy as these intersect with journalism. So far, more than 90 independent news publications have joined IMPRESS. Their journalists should have at least the same legal status as those journalists at major news providers whose codes are already recognised in the bill.
